1 Human Transport Topic 13

2 Human Transport Closed circulatory system
Absorbs and circulates materials Carries needed materials to the cells, carries wastes away

3 Blood Transports, regulates, and protects Liquid Tissue

4 Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes)
Function: Carry oxygen and carbon dioxide Contains hemoglobin Made in the bone marrow Broken down in liver and spleen

5 RBC’s Characteristics: No Nucleus! Disc shaped
Most abundant blood cells

6 RBC’s Under a Microscope

7 White Blood Cells (Leukocytes)
Function: Protect against infection Different types of WBC’s Phagocytes: engulf bacteria Lymphocytes: make antibodies

8 WBC’s Characteristics: Have a Nucleus Large, round cell
Least abundant blood cells

9 WBC’s & RBC’s Under a Microscope

10 Platelets Function: Characteristics: Clot blood
Contain fibrin (a protein) 2nd most abundant blood cells Characteristics: Small pieces of cells

11 Platelets, WBC’s & RBC’s Under a Microscope

12 Plasma Liquid portion of the blood Plasma is mostly water (90%)
Makes up 55% of blood

13 Blood Disorders Anemia: Low RBC count, Low iron in blood, not enough O2 transported Leukemia: Disease of the bone marrow, Low WBC count, Abnormal WBC’s form Hemophilia: No clotting factor (hereditary)

14 Blood Vessels Transport blood throughout the body

15 Artery Function: Characteristics:
Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart Characteristics: Thick, elastic walls Smaller arteries=arterioles

16 Vein Function: Characteristics: Carry deoxygenated blood back to heart
Thin, slightly elastic walls Have Valves, prevent backflow Smaller veins=venuoles

17 Capillary Function: Characteristics:
Exchange of materials between blood and cells Connect arterioles & venuoles Characteristics: Thin wall (only 1 cell thick!)

18 THE HEART

19 How the Heart Works

20 The Heart Has 4 Chambers Right Atrium Right Ventricle Left Ventricle
Left Atrium

21 The Septum Separates the right and left sides of the heart.
Prevents deoxygenated blood from mixing with oxygenated blood.

22 The Pericardium Protects the heart

23 Superior Vena Cava Septum Pulmonary Vein Pulmonary Artery Aorta
