10. Strategies for Successful Reading
Chunking: After EACH paragraph, write a one sentence summary. Do this either in right or left margin
Highlight key words in each paragraph that help emphasize the main idea.
Circle words you do not know.
Define words you do not know.
Re-read sentences with the definitions you’ve acquired for the unknown words.
Write any additional notes in the available margin space.
Write down any questions that you have.
Write down what certain characters/situations make you think of; what does it make you wonder?
Restate the main idea in your head after each paragraph.
Re-read if necessary.
