EXCISION REPAIR: corrects accidental changes that occur in existing DNA
-an enzyme (nuclease) cuts out damaged segment of DNA -enzymes DNA polymerase III and ligase fill in the resulting gaps *xeroderma pigmentosum is caused by an inherited defect in an excision-repair enzyme
