2 Figure The base excision repair system is constituted by 3 enzymes (MYH, OGG1, and MTH1) that contribute to protect cells against the mutagenic effects of aerobic metabolism. MYH is responsible for the removal of adenines mispaired with 8-oxoguanine, 1 of the most mutagenic DNA products of oxidative DNA damage. Failure to correct these mispairs leads to somatic G:C→T:A transversions in target genes, that is, APC and KRAS. According to Boparai et al,16 2 distinct pathways seem to exist, 1 leading to conventional adenomas with APC and/or KRAS mutations, and a separate, non-APC route leading to HPs/SSAs with KRAS mutations.
