1 CABINET X-RAY MACHINE OPERATOR RADIATION SAFETY TRAINING COURSE
Hello… and welcome to this unique Radiation Safety Training course designed specifically for facilities that own and operate cabinet type x-ray machines used primarily for security and threat detection purposes and for inspection of products manufactured in the food processing and packaging industry. Today there are several thousand non-medical cabinet x-ray inspection machines installed in hundreds of airports, courthouses, jails, critical infrastructure, mailrooms and food processing and packaging facilities in over 150 countries. These machines are used at checkpoints for increased security, for identifying contraband, and they are used for providing a method of increased quality control inspection of products manufactured and distributed by food processing and packaging companies. State radiation control agency regulations for X-Ray equipment, require that all individuals, who in the course of their employment have duties and responsibilities working with sources of radiation, and who may potentially be exposed to ionizing radiation, must receive training in areas addressing radiation safety. The primary focus of this training course is to provide the cabinet x-ray machine operator and the qualified service provider, with sufficient information to safely operate, inspect, test and maintain these radiation emitting systems, and to ensure regulatory compliance is maintained and proper radiation safety practices are applied while working with or around x-ray inspection systems. 2 INTRODUCTION This unique Radiation Safety Training course has been designed specifically for facilities that own and operate non-medical “cabinet” x-ray inspection systems. Today there are several thousand cabinet x-ray inspection machines installed in hundreds of airports, courthouses, jails, critical infrastructure, mailrooms and food processing and packaging facilities worldwide. Welcome to this unique Radiation Safety Training course designed specifically for facilities that own and operate baggage and cabinet x-ray systems used primarily for security and threat detection inspection purposes and for use in the food processing and packaging industry. Today there are approximately 160,000 baggage and cabinet x-ray inspection machines installed, in part, in hundreds of airports, courthouses, jails, critical infrastructure, mailrooms and food processing and packaging facilities in 150 countries worldwide as a method of increased security, identifying contraband and for increased quality controls and safety of products distributed by food processing and packaging companies to consumers. These x-ray devices are used primarily as a method for providing increased security at checkpoints for identifying potential threats and contraband and for identifying foreign materials in products distributed by food processing and packaging companies. 513 illegal immigrants were found in Tuxtla Gutierrez, northern Mexico, on May 17, 2011

3 INSTRUCTIONS TO X-RAY OPERATORS
X-Ray Operator Training Guidelines The X-Ray Operator shall possess a general knowledge of: The regulations applicable to the x-ray machine. Basic radiation protection principles. What the source of x-ray radiation is, how x-rays are produced and the conditions necessary to produce x-rays. The concept and key elements of an effective ALARA program Biological effects of radiation. The meaning of the x-ray machines main indicators and controls in regard to safety. The machines maintenance and inspection program. Emergency procedures in the event of an accidental overexposure to radiation. X-ray inspection systems must be designed and constructed to conform with the regulatory standards provided in the US FDA performance standards for cabinet x-ray systems found in 21CFR CFR stands for Code of Federal Regulations. This is the responsibility of the manufacturer to comply and for the end user to maintain. State Radiation Control Agency X-Ray regulations and guidance documents provide the requirements and instructions for the registration and safe use of this equipment. These standards and regulations are applicable to all persons who install, operate and maintain them. Each slide is intended to provide a brief summary of the information contained in your training handout also provided on the CD. Upon completion of this presentation you are encouraged to read and review the handout to capture the details of what has been presented. At the end of this course there is a 50 question exam to test your knowledge and comprehension of the materials covered. It is important for you to learn these materials and apply these principles and precautions so you can operate the cabinet x-ray equipment safely and confidently. Let’s get started with Module 1.
