1 stream, river, lake, wetland, or ocean
Surface Water stream, river, lake, wetland, or ocean Stream Erosion

2 What is Surface Water? Water on the surface of the planet

3 Streams and Rivers River Systems: a river and all of its tributaries
Tributary: streams and rivers that run into a larger stream Watershed: All the land that drains into the river or its tributaries Divide: High land that divides watersheds. Floodplain: The area surrounding a river that fills when the river floods.

4 What feature separates watersheds?
DIVIDE

5 Characteristics of Rivers and Streams
Factors that affect the rivers ability to erode and transport Velocity: distance traveled over a period of time. m/s Gradient: Slope of the stream. Rise/run Discharge: volume of water passing a certain point in a given amount of time. Channel Shape: The path where the water flows

6 Stream Erosion Gravity pulls water downhill
This water erodes material along the way in the load When the stream does not have enough energy to carry the material in suspension anymore it is deposited. Point Bar Cut Bank

7 What 4 factors affect stream erosion?
Velocity, discharge, gradient, channel shape

8 Stream Deposition Deposition: Sediments deposit on the inside of the meander where the velocity is slower. Meander: The bend in a river Erosion: Sediments are eroded on the outside of the meander where velocity is higher Oxbow Lake: Forms when the part of the channel is eroded away Erosion and Depostion Just around the river bend! That’s a MEANDER

9 Stream Deposition Deposition: Sediments deposit on the inside of the meander where the velocity is slower. Meander: The bend in a river Erosion: Sediments are eroded on the outside of the meander where velocity is higher Oxbow Lake: Forms when the part of the channel is eroded away Erosion and Depostion

10 Where do sediments deposit in a meander?
Inside the meander where velocity is slower

11 Deltas A delta is fan-shaped deposit that forms when a river flows into a large body of water such as an ocean.

12 Georgia Barrier Islands
The Georgia Barrier Islands formed by erosion due to ocean waves on the coastline.
