1
Classifying Matter
2
Atom The smallest unit of a substance that keeps the properties of that substance.
3
constant composition (what it is made up of is the same everywhere)
Substance Matter that has a constant composition (what it is made up of is the same everywhere)
4
Element A substance that has only one type of atom and cannot be decomposed (broken down) to simpler substances. Can be found on the period table! Aluminum Helium
5
Compound A substance that has two or more different elements. Ratio is fixed. Can be decomposed chemically.
6
Mixture A physical combination of two or more substances.
Each substance keeps its original properties. Can contain different types of matter. Can be separated by physical means.
7
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture that is not constant in composition. Can see/identify the individual parts.
8
Homogeneous Mixture A mixture that looks constant throughout.
Also called solutions Bronze (Copper + Tin)
9
Distillation A process for separating mixtures by evaporating a liquid from a solid or boiling and condensing liquids to separate them.
10
Separation by Filtration
Mixture of a solid and liquid- liquid passes through filter paper and solid remains on paper
