Family Neisseriaceae By: Prof. Dr. Moussa
2
Commensally Neisseria are present in:
Conjunctiva Throat Mucous membrane Rectum, cervix and uterus.
3
Pathogenic Neisseria are:
Neissseria meningitides. N. gonorrhea.

All are +ve or All are –ve
Pathogenic Commensal Nutrient agar Don’t grow Grow At 22°C CO2 need Need Don’t need Biochemical Reaction Glucose Maltose Lactose Sucrose +ve G +ve / M –ve -ve All are +ve or All are –ve Pathogenecity Gonorrhea meningitis None
5
Pathogenic Neisseria Morphology: Gram –ve Diplococcic – kidney shape
Non-motile Non-sporulated Capsulated Habitat: N . meningitis → carried in nasal pharynx N. gonorrhea→ no carrier, if present considered patient
6
Culture Can’t grow in N. agar or Macconkey
They are fastidious microorganism (Need blood to grow) best chocolate agar. The selective media for isolation of pathogenic Neisseria →Thayer Martin Medium → (chocolate agar + antibiotic VCN) vancomycin Colistin Nystatin Grow at 37°C after 24hr aerobically. Non hemolytic Need CO2 (5-10%)
7
What is gonorrhea? It is venereal disease (sexually transmitted)
Acute : male → severe urethral discharge . Female → Cervical discharge . Chronic : Male →morning drops of pus and orchitis lead to sterility & systemic infection . Female →inflammation of fallopian tubes (salpingitis) Inflammation of ovary (oophoritis). Cervical discharge. Antibiotic Colistin resistance
