The M40 was the result of a program in the 1980s to develop a successor to the M17-series protective masks which had been in service with the US armed forces from the 1960s. The C2 canister (gas and aerosol filter) on the M40 mask can protect the user from up to 15 nerve, choking, and blister agent attacks, and two blood agent attacks. The combination of M40 mask features allows the mask to be worn continuously for 8 to 12 hours. NOTE: Any discrepancies with your mask during PMCS should be reported on DA Form 2404, FEB 2011 : Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet

4. M291 Skin Decontamination Kit
M291 Skin Decontamination Kit. The M291 kit consists of a wallet-like carrying pouch containing six individual decontamination packets, enough to do three complete skin decontaminations.
M295 Decontamination Kit, Individual Equipment. The M295 kit allows personnel to decontaminate their individual equipment through physical removal and sorption of chemical agents. (Note: The M295 kit can decontaminate approximately 1,200 square feet.)
M8 Chemical Agent Detector PaperThe M8 Chemical Agent Detector Paper is used to detect the presence of liquid nerve (V and G types) and blister (H-) chemical agents. The M8 booklet is made up of (25) M8 sheets. Each page has three sensitive, indicator dyes on the page. When a sheet is brought into contact with liquid that contains nerve or blister agents, the indicator dyes in the paper react with the agents to produce colored dots. The color indicates the type of agent present. The G series agents are known as Non-persistent, while the V series are persistent. All of the compounds in this class were discovered and synthesized during or soon after World War II. The V series are persistent agents, meaning that these agents do not degrade or wash away easily and can therefore remain on clothes and other surfaces for long periods.
M256A1 Chemical Agent Detector Kit
Used to detect and identify blood, blister and nerve agents present either as liquid or as vapor. May be used to determine when it is safe to unmask, to locate and identify chemical hazards (reconnaissance), and to monitor decontamination effectiveness.

5. Performance Steps 1. Don the mask as quickly as possible.
a. Stop breathing and close your eyes.
b. Remove your helmet.
(1) If you have the M17-, M24-, M25-, M40-, M43-, or
M45-series protective mask, put your helmet
between your legs (above your knees) or hold your rifle
between your legs and place your helmet on the
muzzle. If you drop your helmet, continue to mask.
(2) If you have the M42-series protective mask, remove
your helmet and place it in a convenient location. Avoid
placing it on a contaminated surface if possible.
Chemical-Biological Mask: Field M40-series. The M40-series CB mask consists of a silicone rubber facepiece with a binocular eyelens system and an elastic head harness. Other features include front and side voicemitters (allowing better contact, particularly when operating communications equipment), a drinking tube, clear and tinted inserts, and a filter canister with NATO standard threads. The M40A1 mask provides respiratory, eye, and face protection against CB agents, radioactive fallout particles, and battlefield contaminants. The canister filter cannot be changed in a contaminated environment; the mask was not designed for that contingency. Additionally, the M40A1 mask uses a second skin for additional protection, and also has a quick-doff hood. The primary users include USA and USMC units, and the mask is selectively used by USN personnel.
Chemical-Biological Mask: Combat Vehicle M42A2. The M42A2 CB mask has the same components as the M40. In addition, the M42A2 CVC mask has a detachable microphone for wire communications. The canister on the M42A2 mask is attached to the end of a hose and has an adapter for connection to a GPFU. The M40/M42-series masks also use the same filter canister with NATO standard threads, both use a second skin for additional protection, and both have a quick-doff hood. The primary users include USA and USMC units.

7. Drink water while wearing the mask.
Does not apply to M17- or M24-series masks. The M1 Canteen Cap is for either 1 quart or 2 quart water canteens (28mm). Fits most standard US Military gas masks including the M40, M42, M45, M17, MCU & MSA Millenium, etc. gas mask. Allows user to hydrate while wearing the mask.

8. Drink water while wearing the mask.
WARNING: Do not connect the quick-disconnect coupling half to your canteen
until all surfaces are free of contamination. Chemical contamination could enter
your mouth, resulting in you becoming a casualty. Do not break the mask seal
while drinking from the canteen.
Press in on the top of the
outlet valve cover until the
internal drink tube can be
grasped between your teeth.
Steady the mask assembly,
and pull the quick-disconnect
coupling out of the outlet valve
cover.
Flip open the cover on the M1
canteen cap.
Push the quick-disconnect
coupling into the canteen cap so
that the pin enters the quick-disconnect coupling.
Does not apply to M17- or M24-series masks.

9. Drink water while wearing the mask cont.
WARNING: If resistance is not felt, your drinking system is leaking. Do not
drink. Replace your canteen. If resistance is still not felt, notify your NBC
noncommissioned officer (NCO).
Blow to create positive
pressure. You should
feel some resistance.
Raise the canteen upside
down, and drink if the
system does not leak.
Note. Do not tilt your
head back while drinking.
