Domestic vs. Foreign Policy SS.7.C.4.1
Domestic- Issues or concerns that affect a nations citizens at home Laws, Government Programs, and Government Actions (ie crime, education, economy, healthcare) Foreign- Issues or concerns involving other nations around the world Goals of US Foreign Policy: Protect America Ensure World Peace Promote democracy around world and human rights Trade with other nations to strengthen US economy

Tools the US uses to accomplish Foreign Policy Goals
Diplomacy: Maintaining positive relationships Treaties: Formal agreements between country and another Alliances: Unions of friendship between our country and their allies Military: go to war if necessary Foreign Aide: Help other countries if needed SS.7.C.4.1

International Organizations
Groups of different nations/their citizens working together toward common goals North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) United States, Mexico, Canada ‘Free Trade Zone’, no taxes on imports World Trade Organization: regulates internat’l trade, resolve disputes NATO: 28 countries- Military alliance, to defend each other if attacked United Nations: 193 countries- promotes international cooperation/human rights. World Court- International Court of Justice- 193 members- settles disputes between countries. Judicial Branch of United Nations. SS.7.C.4.2

Non Governmental Organizations International Red Cross-
Protests Human life and Health. Emergency aid and disaster relief. Have volunteers and donated money from people. World Wildlife Fund Protects endangers specifies. People donate money. SS.7.C.4.2

International Conflicts
How the U.S. responds to conflicts Only Congress can declare war President, Commander-in-chief, can order troops in only in times of crisis. (Has to get Congresses permission within 6 months.) Diplomacy- want to avoid wars in they can by maintaining good relations with other countries. World War I- a war between the allies (Russia, France, England, Italy, U.S., etc) and the central powers (Germany, Turkey, etc) from 1914 to 1918 World War II- a war that began in 1937 and lasted until 1945; it involved most of the world's countries. US was involved when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor Allied (US, Russia, Britain etc) and Axis (Japan, Italy, Germany) Korean War- a war between North and South Korea; South Korea was aided by the U.S. and other members of the United Nations from SS.7.C.4.3

International Conflicts
Vietnam War- a military conflict ( ) between the Communist forces of North Vietnam supported by China and the Soviet Union and the non-Communist forces of South Vietnam supported by the U.S. Cuban Missile Crisis Confrontation between US & Russia- Russia had nukes in Cuba aimed at US (13 days only) Never fired a shot. Persian Gulf War- Iraq invaded Kuwait, US sided with it’s ally Kuwait. Long-standing conflict about border & oil production. Iraq War- US invaded Iraq and removed Sadaam Hussein Declared it a “War on Terror” SS.7.C.4.3

Who Influences Our Government
Individuals- one or more people acting together informally Influence government by: voting, petitioning government, run for office themselves, donate to political campaigns, protest peacefully Interest Groups- Formal organizations dedicated to influencing government (Not part of government- biased to issues they represent) Hire lobbyist to talk to gov’t officials about issues they represent. Trying to change laws and regulations. Examples are NRA (Guns) and the NAACP (Civil Rights). Political Action Committee (PAC)- Interest groups can give large amounts of money to political campaigns. (Does this mean they bought their candidates?!?!??)

MEDIA Communication channels and news sources by which citizens receive news, entertainment. Can set the public agenda (what the people/government think is important) based on what they cover. Media “filters” what public knows, choosing what is more or less important. Monitors government, serves as ‘watchdogs’ exposing scandals, problems, and other issues in government Watch for BIAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
