2 Catholic/Protestant Conflicts
Peasants revolt German peasants demanded the end to serfdom angry peasants took to pillaging, burning and raiding monasteries and towns. Martin Luther was horrified by the revolt asked German princes to show “no mercy” in stopping the revolt The princes crushed the revolt killing as many as 100,000 people Many peasants came to resent Luther after this event

War in Germany Many northern German Princes supported Luther Some shared his religious beliefs others saw a good excuse to seize church property Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and princes loyal to the pope agreed to join forces against Luther’s ideas Princes who supported Luther came to be known as Protestants Charles V went to war against the protestant princes in 1546 In 1555 the Peace of Augsburg permitted each prince to decide which religion would be allowed in his state

St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre Huguenot’s (French Protestants) and Catholics fought 8 religious wars ( ) King Charles IX of France orders the assassination of Huguenot Protestant leaders in Paris Once the killing started, mobs of Catholics began massacring Huguenots. Charles issued a royal order to halt the killing, but the massacres spread. An estimated 3,000 French Protestants were killed in Paris, and as many as 70,000 in all of France

The Elizabethan Settlement Henry VIII’s children: Edward VI King at 9 ruled only 6 years and allowed Protestantism to gain hold Queen Mary a devout catholic returned church power to the Pope viciously persecuted Protestants called Bloody Mary Queen Elizabeth Anglican Church: Protestant & Catholic the only legal church in England Priests were allowed to marry Sermons were delivered in English Ceremony such as rich robes and gowns was kept

Effects of Reformation Protestant churches flourished Religion no longer united Europe Power of the church declined Power of states and monarch grew Laid the groundwork for the rejection of religious belief setting the stage for the modern world
