What is Title I? Title I provides FUNDING to schools. It is through Title I funding that we have the ability to work with small groups of students to target their area of need. The government bases our funding on the number of students who receive free/reduced lunch. Your child DOES NOT need to be on free/reduced lunch in order to receive reading services. Funds provide SUPPLEMENTARY reading support to students with identified need. TC

How Was My Child Selected for Title I?
Every student in the school is assessed. Some criteria include PSSA scores, MAP testing, and Aimsweb Universal Assessments that assess the 6 different components of reading. (The 6 areas, or components of reading will be shown on the next slide) Benchmark scores are used (the average score of all the children, nationally, at different points throughout the year) to determine if a child is above, below, or at the level for their current grade. Assessment results are evaluated by reading teachers, building principals, and instructional coaches to determine which students have an area of need in reading. Students are placed into intervention programs based on their biggest area of need. LS

When Is My Child Getting Reading Support?
Every building designates a specific time called WIN each day. During this time, all children work on their biggest area of need in reading. Some children switch among the different classroom teachers. Some children go to a reading teacher to receive their intervention. When your child comes with his/her reading teacher, he/she is NOT missing anything being taught in the classroom. Every child in the grade goes to a specific WIN group. Your child’s group can change. He/she may work with different reading teachers throughout the course of the year. LS
