Hammurabi’s Code Hammurabi was a powerful king who invaded Sumer and made it part of the Babylonian Empire. His Code of Laws set out the rules all citizens were to obey. It stated rights, wrongdoing and punishments.

Justice His Code tried to give justice (fair, equal treatment of everyone) to all, no matter what social class.

In this activity, you and your partner will move to a question card from Hammurabi’s time. Discuss the consequence that you think should be given for that “crime”. We will compare and hear the actual answers after you’ve tried the questions!

Hammurabi’s Legacy (What we learned from him)
Gave the idea that government should provide justice (fair treatment) for the people. Replaced revenge as a way of solving problems. Established that society should be run by laws that everyone knows about.

Pillars of Temples Hammurabi’s Code was engraved on the pillars of temples so everyone would know the laws and be expected to follow them.

Justice for everyone All levels of society were given the same rules and consequences. Same justice for king, upper class, artisans, farmers and lowest classes.
