BLUEPRINT FOR Today Personality/Communication Styles Adults, Activities, and Learning to Learn (ALTs) Big Rocks Small Rocks – How Not to Have to Teach it All The Tragedy of Data Myth Busters The Meaning of Life Keeping Your Tools Sharp Conclusion/Wrap-Up Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

6 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
BLUEPRINT FOR TODAY Take back what would fit into your state/curriculum “More important than the curriculum is the question of the methods of teaching and the spirit in which the teaching is given.” - Bertrand Russell, philosopher/mathematician Participatory Show, don’t tell Respect those speaking HAVE FUN Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

7 Just follow the instructions
Ready. Set. Fold. Just follow the instructions Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

8 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
WHAT THE… Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

9 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
WHAT THE… Same instructions but different shapes – even though: I gave you the instructions – why couldn’t you all get it right? I’ve given these instructions A LOT. I think they are great instructions. How can I give one set of instructions (use the same tool) that will make sense to every one of you? How do you determine the tool that fits the job/student? Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

10 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
TOOL SELECTION Personality Styles – can they help guide the tool we use? One set of tools as a basis for discussion: Adapted from Psycho-Geometrics – Susan Dellinger, Ph.D. Used in WA as a “common language” for instructor training and professional development Models - generalizations vs. individuality Take what makes sense to you. Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

11 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
USE YOUR INSTINCT Don’t think about – which shape below do you like the best? Draw it. Now choose the shape you like the second best. Draw it inside the first. Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

12 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
IT MAY BE THAT… The shape you first drew may describe a “primary” aspect of your personality. And the second may be your “secondary”. Do you only have these two? What is your default? Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

13 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
“SQUARE” Detail oriented Perfectionists Facts over feelings Research Think/process before speaking/doing Won’t release a product until its perfect - More important than deadline Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

14 Speaks while they are thinking Task oriented and deadline driven
Ready for action Make quick decisions Speaks while they are thinking Task oriented and deadline driven Will try as many timez tiyms times and ways as necessary to get the project done on time “TRIANGLE” Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

15 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
“CIRCLE” Relationship oriented Knows the pulse of the group Reads people well Relates to other before deciding Socialization is a must Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

16 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
“SQUIGGLE” Energetic Bored easily Expressive Action oriented Easily distracted Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

17 Fitting the pieces together
How does each “shape” benefit the team? The Class? The squares will ensure things are done (answers are given) correctly The triangles will help keep the team (class) on task and on time The circles will ensure that everyone on the team (in the class) is heard and taken care of The squiggles will provide energy and creativity Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

18 AS AN INSTRUCTOR/COACH
Who would you look to if: You need a by-the-book answer? You need to gauge whether the group needs a break? You need student to gear up and gather round for the next exercise? You need a volunteer for a classroom activity? How would you tell (and meet the needs of) a student that is a : Square? Triangle? Circle? Squiggle? Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

TOOLS OF THE TRADE Adult Learning Lecture Chunking Guided discussion Activities Teaching It All Need to know Nice to know Noise Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

28 ADULT LEARNING TECHNIQUES
What? WHY? Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

29 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
LECTURE PROS CONS Greater control over what is being taught Familiar to most Imparts knowledge quickly to students Lectures can be boring Students feel they are unable to ask questions Instructor centered Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

30 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
CHUNKING PROS CONS Students working in tandem Places instructor in an observer role Student centered Less control over the information presented Greater chance of getting off topic Students may not cover “need to knows” Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

31 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
GUIDED DISCUSSION PROS CONS Encourages students to ask questions Helps students find answers through exploration Student centered Challenges instructor to interact with students Instructor must prompt students toward the correct response Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

32 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
ACTIVITIES PROS CONS Engages students and gets them out of their seat Provides a visual for students to see the concept Student centered Time consuming Students may be reluctant to participate May require additional resources Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

33 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
ACTIVITIES WORKSHOP Risk Reaction Time Cornering Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

? QUESTIONS? Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

38 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
BREAK “Lectures focus on the delivery of information, but the crucial part of education is for the students to make sense of the information delivered to them.” – Eric Mazur Ph.D., Harvard University Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

39 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
The Tragedy of Data Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

40 Lots of data (old and new)
Hurt, 1981 Hurt, 1981 MSF, 2015 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

41 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
Can we all agree? IIHS NHTSA Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

42 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
Bias White hat bias describes a purported bias leading to the distortion of information for a righteous purpose A tendency to “cherry pick” data The term white hat refers to an ethically good person, in this case one who has a righteous goal Specific to motorcycle safety education training, is there a bias toward training vs. safety, or in testing? How do you support your position on: Gear selection? The right beginner bike? Where riders are getting killed? Kidney stones hurt worse than childbirth Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

43 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
Am I biased? In class I might say: “37% of single rider motorcycle fatalities occur in curves.” What the MSF handbook* actually said: Running off the road, usually in corners, accounts for about 37% of total motorcycle fatalities. This is the primary situation in which motorcyclists have single-vehicle crashes. * MSF Basic Rider Course Rider Handbook ver. 7.1, page 32, Curves; 2005 FARS data Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

44 A Washington data source
Washington’s exposure survey on rider behaviors and attitudes. Washington Motorcycle Safety Program Note: these are preliminary results based on initial data dump 9/1/16

45 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
What to make of all this Everyone will not always agree Do we have to agree? Fresh vs. stale data Things we should all be able to agree on: Some people ride motorcycles Most people get home safe after riding motorcycles Some riders wear gear Some people get hurt riding motorcycles Some people die while riding motorcycles Some motorcyclists have tattoos Everything else is open to further: Interpretation Question Speculation Conjecture Study Doubt Debate Analysis Query Guessing Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

46 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
Myth busters Statements that make you cringe: Yeah, the Huyabusa is a great beginner bike! I’m getting my endorsement & heading to Sturgis tomorrow I’m voting for Hillary I’m voting for Trump PowerPoint slides are the best! Things instructors say that make you cringe or you borrow: Drivers are killing riders You can trigger a traffic sensor by revving the motor Don’t be so digital; be more analog If you can eat the animal in one meal go ahead and hit it You never use brakes in corners Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

47 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
Share your knowledge Things we tell students Curriculum Outside the curriculum / state laws Ultracrepidarian Woozle effect The authority figure Argumentum ad verecundiam, or “argument from authority” is a logical fallacy that argues a position is true or more likely to be true because an authority or authorities agree with it Humans have been shown to feel strong emotional pressure to conform to authorities and majority positions Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

48 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
Share your skill Dunning-Kruger effect The unskilled individuals mistakenly think their ability is greater than it is; or The highly skilled individuals underestimate the ease they can do certain tasks and assume it’s easy for everyone Motorcycle controls Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

49 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
? QUESTIONS? Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

50 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
BREAK “The greatest talent is meaningless without one other vital component: passion.” - Selwyn Lager, engineer Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

51 Keeping your tools sharp
“Classroom teachers [instructors] are often ‘on fire’ for the job when they start…and anything on fire can burn out.” – Byron Greenberg “Teacher [instructor] burnout usually occurs when a teacher [an instructor] feels highly stressed, emotionally exhausted, and cynical or uncaring about what happens to students.” – John Rosales Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

52 Or frustrates you? Or exhausts you?
WHAT BURNS YOU OUT? Or frustrates you? Or exhausts you? Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

53 HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU ARE BURNT?
Or frustrated? Or exhausted? Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

54 TOOLS TO repair yourself
Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

55 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
YOUR FAVORITE STUDENT “I never thought a motorcycle instructor could change my life, but I know you really have.” – Former Student Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

56 Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
TENDING THE FIRE Learn new tools Try new things Remember your victories Take care of yourself Take care of each other Take care of your students HAVE FUN – Change Lives Washington Motorcycle Safety Program
