Style Concepts Formatting that is applied to a variety of documents on a regular basis, or that maintains consistency within a publication, can be applied to text using a style. A style is a set of formatting instructions saved with a specific name in order to use the formatting instructions over and over.

Formatting with AutoFormat
Word goes through a document and applies appropriate styles. Format, AutoFormat choose this option to apply formatting to the open document

When AutoFormat applies styles to a document, it also makes corrections as follows: Uses formatting rules to find and format headings, body text, lists, superscript, subscript, addresses, and letter closings Replaces straight quotes and apostrophes with typesetting quotation marks. Deletes extra paragraph marks. Replaces horizontal spaces inserted with the spacebar or the Tab key with indents. Replaces hyphens, asterisks, or other characters used to list items with a bullet (•) Immediately click the Undo button on the Standard toolbar to undo AutoFormat changes.

Creating Styles If all of the predesigned styles do not contain the formatting you desire, you can create your own style in two ways: apply desired formatting to a paragraph and then save instructions in a style specify formatting for a particular style without applying them to text Naming styles: avoid using the names already used by Word should give you an idea what the style will accomplish maximum of 213 characters can contain spaces and commas is case-sensitive do not use backslash (\), braces ({}), or semicolon (;)

A style can be created before you use it rather than creating it by example. Styles and Formatting button or Format, Styles and Formatting type a name specify type select desired formatting options

Creating a Style by Modifying an Existing Style

Removing a Style from Text
Undo – to remove immediately after applying apply a new style OR Edit, Clear, Formats click

You cannot rename Word’s standard styles.

Deleting a Style open document, Format, Styles and Formatting
You cannot delete Word’s standard styles. Any text to which that style is applied is returned to the Normal style.
