Creating Presentations
When you start PowerPoint, a new blank presentation appears on your screen. You can start with this presentation or use slides from an existing presentation, or use a template or a theme. Templates are already formatted with certain themes, graphics, colors, fonts, and layouts. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
7
Creating Presentations (continued)
If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can access more design templates on Microsoft Office Online. Using a template is easier and less time consuming than starting with a blank document. You can also use a template created by yourself or a colleague. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

Inserting Headers and Footers
You can add text to the top or bottom of a slide by inserting a header or footer. You can add the slide number, date or time to a header or footer. Click the Insert tab on the Ribbon; in the Text group, click the Header & Footer button. You can add headers and footers to the slides or to the notes and handouts. Applying Themes You can use a theme to change the appearance of your slides without changing the content. Themes are predesigned graphic styles. To apply a theme to an existing presentation, click the Design tab on the Ribbon. There is a Live Preview feature where you can see the effect of the theme on your slide. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
10
Applying Themes (continued)
Themes come with default fonts and colors that you can change. You can use a theme to change the appearance of a single slide without changing the rest of your presentation. Click the Design tab on the Ribbon to display the Themes group and apply themes to individual slides. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

Using the Slide Master The slide master controls the formatting for all slides in the presentation. Each slide master has layout masters. The Slide/Outline pane shows the slide master with the layout masters nested underneath. The Slide Master tab on the Ribbon is organized into groups to help you work with the slide master. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
12
Using the Notes Master and Handout Master
The handout master lets you add items that you want to appear on your handouts, such as the logo, date, and page number. The notes master includes any text or formatting that you want to appear on all of your speaker notes. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

Editing Pictures in PowerPoint
PowerPoint contains picture editing tools that allow you to edit, format and stylize a picture. The Picture Tools Format tab includes buttons that allow you to adjust the picture’s contrast, color and brightness, set a transparent color, or compress the picture. You can apply a style, add a border, crop, rotate, and resize the picture to best fit the slide. The Reset Picture feature lets you undo the changes you have made. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

Adding Slides You can add a slide to a presentation. You can also duplicate an existing slide by clicking Duplicate Slide on the shortcut menu. PowerPoint places the new slide after the selected slide, using the same layout as the selected slide. Clicking the New Slide button arrow opens the Slide Layout gallery, which allows you to choose a layout for the new slide. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
15
Finding and Replacing Text on Slides
To find and replace text, on the Home tab of the Ribbon, in the Editing group, use the Find and Replace commands. The Find command locates the word or phrase in the Find what text box. The Replace command locates the word or phrase in the Find what text box and replaces it with the word or phrase you have typed in the Replace with text box. Adding Text to Slides The slide layouts create placeholders on the slides that reserve space for the type of information you want to insert. You can use the Slide pane to enter text so that you can see how it looks on the slide. You can also add text using the Outline tab. You can also add text in a text box or shape, rather than into a placeholder. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

Adding Notes to Slides A good PowerPoint presentation generally contains brief, main points about the subject. Use the speaker notes to remind yourself of any additional information you need. To add speaker notes, click the Notes pane below the slide and begin typing, or switch to Notes Page view. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

Changing Font Attributes
If you use a theme, the format of the text is predetermined for consistency throughout the presentation. You can change the font using the buttons on the Home tab in the Font group. To make changes to a word or a line of text, select the word or line of text. To make changes to all text in a placeholder, click the border of the placeholder. You can also use the Mini toolbar as a shortcut to make font changes. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

Checking Spelling, Style and Usage
Automatic spell checking identifies words not in the PowerPoint dictionary by underlining them with a red, wavy line. To correct spelling errors, right-click the word to show the shortcut menu with correction options. You can also check the spelling in a presentation after it is complete. You can also use the Thesaurus to offer a selection of alternative words. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory

Adding Clip Art and Sounds to Slides

Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
Inserting Hyperlinks A hyperlink allows you to jump to another slide, file, or to a Web site if you are connected to the Internet. You can add a hyperlink to go to another slide within your presentation, a different presentation, or to another Office document. You can also add a hyperlink that opens a message window for an address. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
25
Using Custom Animation
You can add select animation effects to any objects on a slide. Animation is what makes slide shows fun and interesting to watch. Effects are organized into four categories: Entrance and Exit define the animation for entry and exit of an object. Emphasis defines the animation for an object already on the slide. Motion Paths allow you to use predefined paths for the movement of an object. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
26
Using Custom Animation (continued)
You can select how an object is animated, arrange animation order, determine whether to display the animation manually or automatically, and adjust the speed of the animation. You can animate the object when you click your mouse, with the previous object, or after the previous object. You may make adjustments to the effects by clicking Effects Options. You can apply animation to the current (displayed) slide. Pasewark & Pasewark Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory
27
Using Slide Transitions
When you run a presentation, slide transitions determine how one slide is removed and how the next one appears. The best view to work in when working on transitions is Slide Sorter view. This is where you can see all the slides at one time. You have the option of selecting the speed at which the slide transitions, adding a sound, and choosing to have the slide advance automatically or manually.
