Types of Characterization
Direct Characterization: The author directly states the character’s traits; we do not have to infer (guess). Indirect Characterization: The author reveals the traits of a character through hints, leaving it up to the reader to infer his or her characteristics based on this indirect information. Authors may indirectly characterize through any of the following methods: What the character says (dialogue) What the character does (actions) What the character thinks (interior monologue) What other characters say about him/her

Complex Character Has more than one aspect to their personality
Often portrayed as conflicted & contradictory Usually realistic & multi- faceted Usually a change occurs within the character

Simple or Supporting Characters
Usually have an effect on the main character They can cause conflict or change Don’t usually change themselves or develop in any “real” way

Character Motivation What are Batman’s motivations?
Character motivation is the reason characters do the things they do or act the way that they act. Different kinds of motivation: They could have a goal, be greedy, want glory, looking for knowledge, redemption, vengeance, psychopath, want to be a teacher, want to shrug responsibility. What are Batman’s motivations?

Questions to ask ourselves about characters….
How does the character advance the plot? What decisions do they make that move the story along? What kinds of interactions does the character have with others and how does this effect the story? How does the character develop the theme? What conflicts and decisions do they have that provide a comment on society or human nature?

Developing Characters
Formative Assessment: Write a paragraph in which you develop a character from your narrative. Use your handout for words to describe/analyze characters.
