Types of Reading On the literacy test you will have several reading and writing tasks to complete. There are three types of reading on the test: 1) Informational/Text Based Reading- presents ideas and information on a topic 2) Graphic Reading- presents ideas and information with the help of graphic features such as diagrams, photographs, drawings, sketches, patterns, timetables, maps, charts or tables 3) Narrative Reading- a real-life story or a dialogue

What do the informational/text based readings look like?
Readings are typically 1-2 pages in length Each paragraph is numbered for easy reference to questions The readings include a picture or graphic related to the text

Fewer than 150 words A picture/graphic with information

What do the narrative readings look like?
1-2 pages long It can be: (1) a real life narrative or (2) a dialogue Real Life Narrative: is an account of a significant time in an individual’s life Dialogue: presents a conversation between two or more people

What do you have to do with the readings?
1) Respond to questions about the reading in a short written response (a few sentences). And/or 2) Answer a series of Multiple Choice questions about the reading. Let’s talk about what the multiple choice questions look like!

Multiple Choice- Tips and Tricks
This is what the question page will look like Your answer will be completed in the Answer Booklet Don’t put your answer on the question sheet. It will not be marked. Check that you are putting your answer in the correct section. Notice that Roman Numerals are used to identify each Section Section I Section II Section III Section IV Section V Section VII, etc You must fill in the bubble to show your answer in the Student Answer Booklet.

EQAO uses distractors. These are answers that are designed to look right, but are not the correct OR most correct choice…… tricky, tricky…. Types of WRONG Multiple Choice Questions: Something which is longer - Look at this closely Something which is a direct quotation – there are only a FEW of these ‘easy and right there’ questions. Something which is logical if you haven’t read the text.

Multiple Choice Tips: Read the questions before you look at the answer. Come up with the answer in your head before looking at the possible answers, this way the choices given on the test won’t throw you off or trick you. Eliminate answers you know are not right. Read all the choices before you choose your answer. Don’t keep on changing your answer, usually your first choice is the right one, unless you misread the question. In “All of the above” and “None or the above” choices, if you are certain one of the statements is true don’t choose “None of the above” or one of the statements are false don’t choose “All of the above.”

Text Structure Question #1 What is the overall organizational structure of this selection? Present to past General to specific Problem to solution Least to most important. This would be linked to a specific reading!

Understanding Questions: Which phrase indicates the popularity of Barries? “Terasa took up this challenge” “Terasa Found a national distributer” “Terasa plied Sierra with many treats” “Terasa delivered her product sales pitch” This is an example of a Directly stated Questions because the answer is in the text.

Now let’s look at some of the types of questions you might see on the literacy test.
Punctuation Question What is the purpose of the asterisk (*) beside “ Direct fishing-related expenditures”? To direct the reader to the graph To indicate the importance of the section To connect the heading to other information To emphasize the amount of fishing – related expenditures. This is a questions from a Graphical Reading Answer “A” in this example.
