4 But First… Before you jump into building a KM strategy consider this

5 Begin the dialogue with:
How is information shared and accessed in your organization? What current strategy exists in your organization for knowledge management? (Ex. How to’s, best practices, client notes, etc.) What has it cost your organization to not have a knowledge management strategy in place? How do you know that the information that is shared in your organization is accurate? Who is responsible for sharing information across the organization? Aren’t our job descriptions enough? Quicker problem solving Staying power Improves product and service quality

Declarative Knowledge Product knowledge, references, resources, policies Procedural Knowledge How to’s, sequence of events Casual Knowledge They why behind our actions and conclusions (Best practices, information about competition and clients, etc.) Contextual Knowledge The circumstances/intentions under which the knowledge was developed and is to be applied (Ex. If this happens, then apply this./ Busy seasons, slow seasons, types of clients, etc.)

Who will be the project champion to lead this strategy overall? Who will you solicit for data (Preferably line managers and employees who are involved with the data that is being shared) Who else should be included? What are the KM strategy goals? (To capture what everyone in the organization does in detail, capture just the top 5-10 critical duties that are impacting business goals, gather data in phases?)
