1 Experiment design project

2 Raise your hand if you have ever texted while driving.
Seems like a pretty straight-forward question, doesn't it? Now, how many of you did NOT raise your hand because you don't drive?? How many of you did not raise your hand because you don't think texting at a stop sign or red light counts? How many of you did not raise your hand because you didn't think that READING a text counts? What seemed like a pretty straight-forward and simple question doesn't really do the job, does it??

3 ProbStat Experiment Design Exercises
 1) You want to do a study to determine what proportion of American teen-aged drivers have texted while driving. a. Describe how you are going to select your sample. 1) Remember, EVERY teen-aged driver in the U.S. must have an EQUAL opportunity to be selected for your sample. 2) Remember also that your sample must reflect the population as a whole. a) Your sample should be almost identical to the population in terms of racial, gender, socio-economic, and geographic considerations. b. Design a survey to be used to find out what proportion of your sample has texted while driving. 1) Make certain that the question(s) used are clear, non-leading, and will actually give you the information you are looking for.

4 2) You want to do a study to determine the maximum number of hours that a truck driver can SAFELY drive in a 24 hour period of time. a. Describe how you are going to select your sample. 1) Remember, EVERY truck driver in the U.S. must have an EQUAL opportunity to be selected for your sample. 2) Remember also that your sample must reflect the population as a whole. a) Your sample should be almost identical to the population in terms of racial, gender, socio-economic, and geographic considerations. b) Your sample should also have the same proportion of local and long-distance drivers as the population has, as well as match the population in terms of percentages of drivers who own their own truck as opposed to driving for someone else. b. Design an experiment to test the effect of fatigue on a driver’s ability to safely drive a truck. 1) Make certain that the method(s) used are clear, non-leading, safe, and will actually give you the information you are looking for.

5 Divide into your groups and get to work!!
I will be available for consultation, but you will need to do the bulk of the heavy lifting.
