2 This meant many FADS were born….
With peace and prosperity in the 1920’s, there was more time and money available for entertainment… This meant many FADS were born…. A FAD is something HUGELY popular for a time… but eventually fades away CAN YOU THINK OF ANY FADS IN YOUR LIFETIME?

4 Biggest Fad of the 1920’s was… FASHION
Women were gaining freedom Fashion known as “Flappers” Boyish style short hair (Bob) Flat chest Short skirts Floppy hats Pantsuits Tight fitting clothes

5 FLAPPERS Flapper lifestyle Flappers were views as “wild”
More than just fashion Smoked Drank Danced Went to Dance Clubs ALONE Flappers were views as “wild” Out of control Rebellious spirit

6 Men’s fashion was also changing….
Baggy pants/knickers Bright snappy hats Bow ties Greased hair Long pocket watch chains ZOOT SUITS

7 The youth in these days had their own slang or lingo:
Ankle To walk somewhere Banana Oil Nonsense Jalopy A beat up old car Upchuck Vomit The Berries The Best!

9 It is important to note, most of these changes were in the cities, people who lived in the country, rural Canadians still clung to a very traditional lifestyle

10 Nightclubs Drinking was formally banned in Canada in 1918 (Prohibition) But people did it anyways! Canada REPEALED Prohibition in 1919! The US maintained Prohibition long after this! Illegal nightclubs were known as BLIND PIGS and SPEAKEASIES Booze provided by bootleggers and rumrunners who illegally made or sold alcohol… Jazz music was the popular form of music The big dance craze was the Charleston

Movies that which cost a nickel Movies were silent and in black and white Two of the biggest stars were: Douglas Fairbanks Mary Pickford Pickfair was the name of their estate

13 “Talkies” were introduced in the early 1920’s…
But were believed to be a FAD, many thought talking in films wouldn’t last! The Jazz Singer was the first talkie in Canada in 1927

14 Sports The Golden Age of Sports in Canada
Professional Sports began for the most part in the 1920’s The Golden Age of Sports in Canada Lacrosse was on the decline Hockey was popular Football was a sport of the wealthy! Baseball very popular North & South of the border!

16 Hockey Night in Canada a popular radio program
The NHL had just been born! The “Original 6” teams: Hockey Night in Canada a popular radio program Foster Hewitt invented a popular catch phrase… “HE SHOOTS, HE SCORES”
