Electromagnetism
2
Electric current produces a magnetic field
Electromagnet Electric current produces a magnetic field Electromagnetism is the relationship between electricity and magnetism
5
Characteristics of magnetic field produced by a current
Can be turned off Can have its direction changed Can have its strength changed
7
A coil of wire with a current running through it
Solenoid A coil of wire with a current running through it
9
How are a solenoid and a bar magnet alike and different?
Alike because both have north and south poles. Different because the poles of the solenoid will change directions with the direction of the current.
10
Solenoid with a metallic and magnetic core (iron)
Electromagnet Solenoid with a metallic and magnetic core (iron) Can be turned on or off
11
Increasing the strength of an electromagnet
Increase current in solenoid Add more loops of wire to solenoid Wind the coils of solenoid closer together Use a stronger magnetic metal for core
12
What are some uses of electromagnets?
The uses of electromagnets include: Recording information on DVDs and iPods Computer hard drives Credit cards Lifting heavy objects/ car lifter at the junkyard
13
Common electromagnets
14
Common electromagnets
15
Magnetic Induction Occurs when a magnetic field is created that competes with the Earth’s own magnetic field. Ex: Putting a compass near an electromagnet will cause the compass needle to change directions
