BIG IDEA #1: HOW TO APPROACH A POEM
When you are presented with a poem, read multiple times and activate the strategies of VISUALIZATION and QUESTIONING first! Ask Yourself 1. Who (subject/persona) is speaking? 2. Is there tension in the poem? 3. What is the speaker’s tone? 4. Where is the poet taking their reader (Is there a sense of place?) 5. Which images and words matter to this? Are you 100% certain about ALL the possible meanings? 6. Are there spots where you know you are dealing with figurative language that can be unpacked?
