Status of women in Zanzibar
Poverty level is extremely high eg in Micheweni district 74% of people live below the basic needs poverty line and 33% below the food poverty line. Gender issues have not yet been fully mainstreamed in public policies and programs for Zanzibar. There is no specific legislation to address GBV. Child marriage and GBV are both prevalent in Zanzibar but tend to be under-reported due to the “culture of shame and silence surrounding these issues. In North Unguja for instance 19.1 percent of all child bearing women gave birth between the ages of 15 to 18 years, and 4.3% between the ages of 12 to 15 years old. Figure : Map of Zanzibar . Contribution to gender equality
1,400 land dispute cases reported to relevant authorities including land department, legal aid center, WAKF and Trustee commission. 40 women were able to register their land More GBV cases are reported.
