11 Roles for Commissions How is a Commission a value add for
ATJ Community Leadership Bar/Pro Bono Legal Aid Courts Consider using handout of breakdown of activities to get people thinking and ask, what should we add to this list? What really matters? Some activities contribute to building immediate political capital but may have no real long term value.

12 How is success measured
Dollars invested / new funding partners Relationships built / ATJ Network Strength Projects Launched Public Awareness Consider short – medium – long term gains #1 and #3 short term gains, but #2 and #4 lead to long term gains and growth of #1 and #2

13 Capacity and Politics Matrix:
Low capacity enhancement but high political value High capacity enhancement and high political value Low political value and low capacity enhancement High capacity enhancement but low political value X= capacity enhancement value Chart your projects. Give and get examples. Y = political value

14 Task for 2018 Recruit local marketing/ad/communications firm to help you pro bono to create a pitch presentation Who is impacted by the civil justice system What makes the civil justice system different from the criminal justice system? Example from Illinois Why do civic leaders need to care about the civil justice system? Where do civil justice consequences have the most negative impacts? Why does the civil justice system matter? How can you <the targeted audience> make a difference? Consider using story maps for Amazon Headquarters as a model who? Everyone – state, county, municipal, admin NO right to counsel, BUT can lead to incarceration When it is not working, it impairs their ability to meet their goals or mission, whether a business seeking a profit, a school trying to educate people, or a non-profit trying to enrich people’s lives Can use mapping to find out where Snags up economy – and erodes the rule of law, trust and confidence, as well as other economic and social impacts It depends – segment and target message
