1 Evaluate the extent to which women’s lives changed during the Progressive Era ( ) of United States history. *40 min Historically defensible thesis/claim that establishes a line of reasoning. TAKE A SIDE! Describe a broader historical context relevant to the prompt. WHAT’S GOING ON? Support an argument in response to the prompt using specific/relevant examples of evidence. PROPER NOUNS Use historical reasoning (CCOT) to frame or structure an argument that addresses the prompt. TERMINOLOGY Use evidence to corroborate, qualify, or modify an argument that addresses the prompt. NOT YOUR OPINION

2 X. However, A & B. Therefore, Y.
X = Opposition ¶ 1 x1 = Context ¶ 2 A = Category ¶ 2 B = Category ¶ 3 Y = Claim ¶ 4 Each ¶ has three parts!!!

3 How do you get to the (6) points?
1 pt – Thesis 1 pt – Context 2 pts – Evidence 2 pts – Analysis & Reasoning

4 THESIS – 1st / Intro Paragraph
Do NOT restate the prompt Make a solid claim The thesis IS the introduction It should follow the formula exactly as written. X. However, A and B. Therefore, Y. Doing this guarantees the POINT for your thesis statement.

5 The worst…. “Women’s lives changed greatly during the Progressive Era.” “During the Progressive Era women’s lives changed as rural moms tossed aside homemaking and children to work in factories, aka Rosie the Riveter.”

6 CONTEXT – 2nd Paragraph Before / during / after 1890-1920
Why this era? Why not another? First wave of feminism in 1848 (before) Earlier abolition and temperance movements (during) Progressive reforms influencing New Deal programs (after) Put this after the thesis, in the second paragraph. These should include ELABORATION!!! Why are they connected? A phrase or reference about the prompt’s historical context is NOT enough. Doing this guarantees the POINT for your contextualization.

7 The worst…. “The influx of immigrants to America was a leading cause that brought about change in women’s lives during the Progressive Era.”

8 EVIDENCE – 2nd & 3rd Paragraphs
2nd Paragraph = proper noun(s) – Category A 3rd Paragraph = proper noun(s) – Category B 1 pt per (2) proper nouns 1 pt per supporting your claim

9 Proper Nouns Jane Addams Susan B. Anthony Hull House
Women’s Christian Temperance Union Young Women’s Christian Organization Florence Kelley Alice Paul National American Women Suffrage Association Margaret Sanger Carrie Chapman Catt Carrie Nation National Consumer League Elizabeth Cady Stanton Ida B. Wells International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Charlotte Perkins Gilman Proper Nouns Anti-Saloon League Mary Elizabeth Lease Populist Party 18th Amendment 19th Amendment Knights of Labor Mary Harris “Mother” Jones Industrial Workers of the World Muller v Oregon Triangle Shirtwaist Fire Women in Industry Board NOT New Deal policies/processes Civil War World War II

10 The worst…. “Symbols like Rosie the Riveter encouraged women to join the workforce, but then when men came home, were pushed aside. When the women were pushed out of the workforce, they focused their time on antebellum reforms.”

11 ANALYSIS & REASONING – 4th Paragraph
1 pt = only CONTINUITY or CHANGE 2 pts = CONTINUITY and CHANGE Multiple variables Across time periods Multiple perspectives Diverse or alternative views - paradox

12 The worst…. “Though women faced many changes in their lives during the Progressive Era. They also faced many continuities. They faced the injustices of having to stay home and raise the children while their husband was the provider and usually they did not go on to further their education to a higher level through college.”

13 The worst…. “The passage of the nineteenth amendment was greatly influenced by the establishment of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, which granted emancipation, citizenship, and suffrage for African Americans. Due to the anger that resulted in the passing of the suffrage for African Americans, the event lead to women becoming more politically involved and unified throughout the country. This resulted in the start of women’s suffrage movement that started in 1848 with the Seneca Falls Convention.”

14 The worst…. “The changes made to women’s lives during the Progressive Era brought them the right to vote (19th Amendment) and a greater voice in democracy. The continuities during Progressive Era was that economically and socially things pretty much remained the same for women during the period 1890–1920.”

15 Complex understanding…
Explaining nuance of an issue by analyzing multiple variables Explaining both similarities and differences, or explaining both continuity and change, or explaining multiple causes, or explaining both causes and effects Explaining relevant and insightful connections within and across periods Confirming the validity of an argument by corroborating multiple perspectives across themes – multiple BAGPIPE categories Qualifying or modifying an argument by considering diverse or alternative views or evidence
