1 Plant and animal cells Biology 1

2 Learning goals We are learning about the cell theory.
We are learning to identify the structure and function of cell organelles.

3 The Cell Theory Biology is built on the Cell Theory which states:
All living things are made up of one or more cells and their products. The cell is the simplest unit that can carry out all life processes. All cells come from other cells; they do not come from non-living matter.

4 Modern cell theory Cells contain DNA which is passed on from cell to cell. All cells are basically the same in chemical composition. All basic functions are carried out inside the cell. Cell activity depends on the organelles found inside the cell.

5 Single-Celled Organism Multicellular Organism
Types of Organisms ORGANISM Without a nucleus With a nucleus Prokaryote Eukaryote One Cell Many Cells E.Coli Single-Celled Organism Multicellular Organism Animal Plant Amoeba Pine Tree Whale

6 Cell Structure your body is made up of many specialized organs that carry out all processes to live. in the same way, a eukaryotic (with nucleus) cell also has specialized parts called organelles. different cell types (plant vs. animal) have different organelles.

7 Learning goals We are learning about the cell theory.
We are learning to identify the structure and function of cell organelles.

8 On your own… Read pp.30-32 Complete Parts of a Cell handout.
