1 May 10. 2017 Buh-Bye AY 16/17….. Almost.
MPH/BSPH Meeting May Buh-Bye AY 16/17….. Almost. It’s hard to believe the academic year is coming to a close, and this is our final meeting of the 16/17 AY.

2 AY 16/17 Two daunting tasks: Interim Report Curricular Transition
Address deficiencies process and outcomes Curricular Transition We started the academic year with two ginormous tasks: 1) to address the deficiencies noted in our self-study report and 2) to transition to an entirely new set of program competencies. Today, I’ll update on both.

3 Interim Report Update Two plans left to complete/approve Write report
Assessment plan previously discussed; hyperlinked on agenda Workforce development plan Assess Delivery Write report Review As shown in the actions document hyperlinked on the agenda, we’ve addressed most of the deficiencies noted in the self-study report. Today, we will address the final two issues, one of which we’ve discussed previously (the assessment plan). Then, all that is left is writing the report and organizing the supporting information. I will be working on this over the summer and will send you a draft once crafted. I’d appreciate individual feedback, then we’ll review the draft at our August workday before sending it out.

4 Workforce Development: Assess
We must assess professional development needs of individuals currently serving public health functions in our self-defined priority community or communities Who are our priority communities? Why are they our priority How do we assess their needs? According to the 2016 CEPH criteria, we must assess the professional development needs of individuals currently serving PH functions in our self-defined priorities communities. There are two tasks to this assessment criteria: 1) identifying our priority populations and 2) deciding how to assess their needs.

5 Workforce Development: Deliver
We must provide professional development to address needs identified. Describe process for developing and implementing professional development activities, ensuring that these activities align with needs identified in assessment. Once we’ve assessed the needs of our priority populations, we need to have a delivery plan.

6 Workforce Development: Assess Suggestions
Who/Why? AHD partners: part of relationship Orgs serving marginalized pops (diversity plan) How do we assess their needs? Advisory meetings/AHD meetings Informal needs assessment State-wide survey results (UK taking lead) The easiest priority professional communities would be the districts with which we have academic health department MOAs/MOUs. Because of our diversity goals, perhaps we should also identify organizations that provide direct services to minority/marginalized populations. Because CEPH is generally advocating mixed-methods approaches, we can build in a workforce development agenda item in our advisory committee meetings as well as having the AHD liaison bring it up in the AHD meetings. We need to make sure there are minutes to reflect this happening. We could also ask the AHD directors to assess their workforce and share the information with us – creating, perhaps, a prioritized wish list for training. For organizations serving our diversity populations, informal discussion would probably work best. UK is also taking the lead on doing a state-wide assessment of workforce development needs. Neale was involved in the first meeting, and I’ve requested we be kept in the loop. Assessment of needs can be formal or informal: periodic meetings with community members and stakeholders, formal or informal needs assessments, focus groups with external constituents, surveys that are administered or co-administered to external constituents and use of existing data sets.

7 Workforce Development: Deliver Plan
Development/Implementation: Certificate programs Minimum of one workshop each year to an AHD on a priority area identified in assessment? Minimum of workshop every year to diversity organization? This is what we need to vote on also. The third item dovetails with the diversity strategies.

8 Curricular Transition Update
Officially the new MPH new vs old students: year of juggling Curricular Alignment – Part 2 New competencies Align with revised syllabi, course content HE Certificate: passed GC Report: Due in December Timeline for curricular review Starting now, the revised MPH is our official program. Most of the first year and online students have elected to transfer to the new program. We still have some in the old program, so this next year will be a juggling act. I’ll be working with the advisors to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible, but your patience and assistance in getting through the next year is appreciated. Before we submit the curricular transition report to CEPH, we’ll need to have all syllabi in their new form and do another curricular review that includes the new five competencies. Please work on both of these as you update your courses for fall. We’ll jump right in with this in the beginning of AY 17/18.

9 Next Steps Summer Homework
Embedded GrAPEs: Description of project types needed for courses:  ASAP Syllabi update: August (fall and spring courses, please) New student orientation:  Create mediasite intros for online students I’m also going to ask you to also think about ways of embedding applied practice experiences into your courses. Please see the report hyperlinked to the agenda for guidelines. I’ll you a request to provide details on the type of projects you can embed. This is for all courses, and not just required core courses.

10 Next Steps Strategic planning Strategies to measure program goals
Action plans New faculty: what do we need? When we get back in the fall, we’ll start in on the strategic planning process, and identify measures for the program goals we’re voting in today. We’ll also work on developing actions plans to meet the goals. Hopefully by then, we’ll also know if we’re going to be able to search for a new position. We need to look critically at what areas we need the most.

11 Thank you Before I close, I want to thank you for all of your hard work this year. We’ve accomplished a lot, but only because we’ve pulled together and worked hard. Thank you.
