To become a protogene, a non-genic sequence must become transcribed, become translated, and have a beneficial function. Gray represents an initially random or non-genic sequence. Colored boxes indicate acquisition of the necessary sequence signals for transcription (red), translation (blue), and function (orange). We show the ‘function’ step as a folded protein, but an unstructured amino acid sequence may have a beneficial function, and conversely, well-folded proteins need not have a beneficial function.
