Adonai - Kurios Adonai is a plural of Majesty. The singular means Lord, master, owner (Gen. 19:2; 40:1; 1 Sam. 1:15). Adonai calls our attention to the sovereignty of God. It is translated by the word “Lord.” “It occurs some 340 times in the Old Testament. It is used only of God.”

The New Testament counterpart of the name Adonai is the word Kurios, which also means Lord. In an interesting confirmation of the deity of Christ the name Lord is applied to both God the father and to Jesus. The emphasis is again upon the authority and supremacy of Christ. This is exactly what Thomas admitted when he responded to Christ in the upper room with the words, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28).

Isaiah 9:6 is a Messianic prophecy listing five descriptive names for Christ which communicate different aspects of His glory and work. New Testament references to the person of Christ can be summed up in the extended title, the Lord Jesus Christ. Lord is the New Testament rendering of Adonai. Jesus is the Greek word for Joshua and means Savior. Christ is the Messianic title, “the Anointed One.”
