Thermochemistry Feel the Heat!
2
Heat q is the symbol for heat in equations
Heat always flows from a warmer object to a cooler object, and will continue to flow until the temperature of both is the same Law of conservation of energy: energy is neither created nor destroyed Exothermic vs. endothermic
3
Heat: units Calorie (dietary)=1 kilocalorie Heat flow
calories joules Heat capacity: the amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of an object 1°C Specific heat: the amt. of heat to raise 1 g of a substance 1°C
4
Heat: calculations q=mcΔT, on your tables!
LABEL EVERYTHING! Then you will be able to tell where it belongs, that your units cancel out properly, so that your calculated answer is correct!
5
Enthalpy Enthalpy: the heat content of a system at constant pressure
Calorimetry: the measurement of heat flow into or out of a system for chemical or physical properties Calorimeter: an insulated device to measure the heat released or absorbed during the process
6
Heat of reaction orin changes of state
Heat of reaction: the enthalpy change for a chemical equation as written Heats of fusion/solidification: reverse of each other Heats of vaporization/condensation: same Heat of solution: release or absorption of heat when a solute dissolves in a solvent
