Early Years of the war By: Hailey & Isaac 15-2

New Technology in the War
These new weapons made the Civil War the most deadliest war than any of the previous ones. New weapons loaded faster, were more deadly, and more accurate. Both sides used Ironclads, or warships covered with protective iron plates. Cannonballs bounced off iron plates, and marked end of wooden ships.

The War in the East Lincoln removed McDowell and replaced him with George McClellan to be in command. After 7 months McClellan finally attacked, he moved some 100,000 troops by boat to a peninsula south of Richmond. 15,000 soldiers blocking his way, McClellan didn’t have all the soldiers he wanted because Lincoln ordered 37,000 troops to guard Washington D.C. McClellan waited 1 month before moving again – May 31, 1862 the Confederates stopped attack on Richmond’s capital and McClellan was forced to retreat.

The War in the East Lee slipped his army into Western Maryland, which now let McClellan figure out that the Confederate army was split into two parts. Sept. 17, 1862 became the bloodiest day of the war, the Union just kept attacking but suffered about 12,000 casualties. Lee lost almost 14,000 men almost 1/3 of his army, and was forced to pull his beaten up army back to Virginia No one really one at battle of Antietam , but since Lee retreated North claimed the victory

The War in the West General Ulysses S. Grant lead most successful of all the armies McClellan and Grant were two very different people, Grant wore old rugged out clothes and McClellan wore a uniform Union forces started to gain control of most of the Mississippi River from the battles in 1862, Grant moved his army south from Kentucky First he captured Fort Henry along Tennessee River, then he captured Fort Donelson along the Cumberland River Fort Doelson Shiloh Vicksburg

The War in the West That created two water routes into the western Confederacy that were now wide open. Now Grant wanted to travel to Corinth but before he had a chance Albert Johnston attacked. On April 6, 1862 the battle of Shiloh started, the South suffered about 11,000 casualties, and the North suffered about 13,000 casualties. However, the Union forced the confederate to retreat from the railroad center, Union also gained control of Western Tennessee and part of Mississippi River. On April 26, a guy named Farragut and his fleet came from the Gulf of Mexico and captued New Orleans, and nearly the entire river was now in Union hands.
