Intro to Computers 1b Intro to Computers.ppt
2
Bits & Bytes We Add…. 1 + 2 = 3
3
However the computer can only work by a series of on/off, e.g., based boolean logic-- yes/no
4
the two states (on/off) the computer requires to do everything utilizes binary code this is a form of boolean logic
5
Therefore, to add 1+2… the computer must add in binary (8 bits)
6
100000001 + 200000010 = 300000011 Computer Addition for every single alphanumeric character (any letter); has an eight digit number 8 bits for one byte
7
8 bits = 1 byte 1,000 bytes = 1 Kilo Byte 1,000 Kilo Bytes = 1 Meg 1,000 Meg = 1 Gig 1,000 Gig = 1 Tera byte
8
A common 3.5 inch floppy disk - 1.44 meg (or 1,440 kilo bytes) CDs are usually 700 meg DVDs are around 4.7 gig Hard disks (inside computers) 2 gig (old) to 250 gig (or more) USB portable drive (sticks) range from 64 meg to 4 - 8 gig
9
Save your work in the… ….your Comm Tech Folder within the G: drive--create a foldersaccording to the sample provided (next slide) Back-up your files onto: memory stick (jump drive) hand-in folder (network) burn a DVD Remember!!
