IRONY Dramatic irony: difference between what I know and character knows to create suspense. The character thinks he is clever and cautious; the reader thinks the narrator is a psychopath. Situational irony: difference between what is expected and what actually occurs. Verbal irony: someone says the opposite of what they mean.

“The Tell Tale Heart” Flashback- Poe starts the story with the murderer telling us he has murdered someone, story is about the process (rising action) An unreliable narrator is a narrator whose assessment of events cannot be trusted for some reason. The narrator uses the 1st person pronouns my, me, and I. The 1st person narrator make the tone conversational, as if the narrator is calmly telling why the idea of the murder is appropriate. This leads to immediate tension for the reader.

Analyzing the text- Responses
Examples of suspense: “I scarcely breathed”, “It grew louder, I say, louder every moment” He points to his “ wise precautions” in is “concealment of the body” as evidence of his sanity. Poe wants to emphasize this idea that is repeated from lines The sound is is the beating of the old mans heart, but it is likely the narrators heart.
