Classical Conditioning
Behaviorism Ivan Pavlov—Russian physiologist Classical conditioning learning procedure in which associations are made between a natural stimulus and a learned, neutral stimulus
4
Pavlov’s Experiment
5
Pavlov’s Experiment Unconditioned stimulus (UCS)—food; event that elicits a predictable response without previous training Unconditioned response (UCR)—salivation; automatic (natural) reaction to a stimulus Conditioned stimulus (CS)—tuning fork; once neutral stimulus that elicits a given response after a period of training paired with a UCS Conditioned response (CR)—salivation by the sound; learned reaction to a CS
6
Pavlov’s Experiment
7
Examples Identify all Terms (UCS, UCR, Ns, Cs, CR)
8
Come up with an example of classical conditioning
CC Diagram Come up with an example of classical conditioning Create a diagram of how classical conditioning is developed in your example Include: Before, During, After Labels (UCS, UCR, NS, CS, CR) Pictures COLOR (optional)

10
More CC Terms Acquisition – Pairing the conditioned stimulus (CS) and the unconditioned stimulus (UCS) to strengthen the conditioned response (CR) Generalization – responding similarly to stimuli that are similar to the original CS Discrimination – responding differently to similar, yet distinct stimuli to the original CS Extinction – Gradual disappearance of a CR when the UCS stops being given with the CS Spontaneous Recovery – A while after extinction, the CR returns though not to full strength
11
More CC Terms Example Apply to the example
12
Little Albert Case Study
What concepts of classical conditioning are shown in this case study? Explain each.
13
CC Diagram Apply each of the concepts you have just learned (acquisition, generalization, discrimination, extinction, and spontaneous recovery) to your own example RECORD ON THE BACK OF YOUR DIAGRAM Don’t forget: Before, During, After and all terms (UCS, UCR, NS, CS, and CR)!
14
Pavlov’s Experiment Method: Pavlov would play the tuning fork, then present the dog with meat to elicit the response of salivation Neutral stimulus—stimulus that had nothing to do with the response (ex: tuning fork) Natural stimulus—stimulus that triggers response naturally (ex: food) Response—salivation
