Sifting Uses sieves or sifters as a way to separate solids of varying sizes Examples: sorting rocks, gravel, and sand Think of another example of a mixture that can be separated by sifting.
4
Magnetic Attraction Separates magnetic materials, such as iron, steel, nickel or cobalt, from non-magnetic materials in a mixture Example: separating iron filings from sand Think of another example of a mixture that can be separated by using a magnet.
5
Filtration Removes solids from liquids by using a filter
Example: a mixture of sand and water Think of another example of a mixture that can be separated by using a filter.
6
Evaporation Heat solution until liquids turn to gas, and leave the solids behind. Example: boiling a water and salt solution until all that is left are the salt crystals
7
