English I Literary Terms: Set Three

Point of View- Viewpoint from which the story is told.
1st Person POV- Story is told using the pronoun “I” by a character in the story. 2nd Person POV- Speaker speaks directly to the audience using the second-person pronoun “YOU.”

Limited 3rd Person POV- Narrator, who is not a character in the story, tells the story only from the viewpoint of only ONE character using “he”, “she”, “it”, or the character’s name. Omniscient POV- ALL-KNOWING The person telling the story knows everything there is to know about the characters and their problems. The narrator knows the past, present, the future, and thoughts of all characters.

Prose- Ordinary form of literature-NOT POETRY
Symbol- Something which stands for or represents something else (Flag) Theme- Main idea Characterization- Method of developing a character (Indirect & Direct) Mood- Atmosphere of the story Tone- Attitude the writer takes towards his subject

Novel- Lengthy fictional work
