3. What is ionising radiation?
Ionising radiation comes in many forms and from many sources.
It includes the radiation from natural substances, i.e. α-, β- and γ- radiation.
It also includes radiation from artificial sources, such as X-ray machines and nuclear reactors.

5. Effects of Radiation on People
As the body absorbs radiation energy, ions produced can change or destroy living cells.
High doses can even stop cells from working and multiplying which can lead to death.
Cancer & Leukaemia
Hereditary defects in children and grandchildren of exposed people.

7. Precautions For Humans
No eating and drinking where any radioactive materials are handled.
Protective clothing and disposable gloves worn to handle radioactive materials.
Using shielding
Keeping a large distance between the person and the source.
Keep exposure times as short as possible.
Wear film badge to keep record of the radiation dose received.
