1 Mind Stretcher 10/3/17 1. From where do most animals get nitrogen?
2. Which of the following does not belong and why? (3 of these move Carbon one way…1 of them moves it the opposite way) Combustion c. Photosynthesis Respiration d. Decomposition Eating other Organisms Photosynthesis takes in/removes carbon from atmosphere, the others release it/add it

2 Traveling Nitrogen Activity
In this game you are a nitrogen atom. You are going to travel the nitrogen cycle stopping in many exciting locations- some of which you probably have never been to before. For each stop along your journey, remember to record WHERE you went (stamp) and HOW you got there (copy sentence after rolling dice). **There is a map drawn on the front left side of the board to help you find the locations!

3 My Nitrogen Journey- Comic strip or Journal entry
Use your “passport” sheet to write an interesting story about your journey as a nitrogen molecule Choose 4-5 segments IN ORDER of how you traveled!!! Be creative! (Please choose a segment that INCLUDES where you experienced “nitrogen fixation”) Make SURE to include: The name of each LOCATION visited (Animal Waste, Live Plants, etc.) Tell WHAT HAPPENED to you in order for you to travel from place to place (HOW) Use the VOCAB term: NITROGEN FIXATION If you are about to be used by plants, you must be “fixed” first by bacteria (nitrogen fixation process)

4 How do I get started? Here is my CREATIVE example…
I was minding my own business enjoying a swim inside a fish (LIVE ANIMAL) when next thing I know, it died! Are you kidding me?! I’m decomposing within this dead fish (DEAD ANIMALS) and soon find myself dissolved into the OCEAN. A little while later a friendly bacteria got ahold of me and transformed me into a different form. My mother once told me this was the process of nitrogen fixation…now I could actually be used by plants! (LIVE PLANTS) Sure enough, a piece of seaweed took me in and made me feel at home. The seaweed needed me to help build protein and DNA in its plant cells. I was so helpful!

5 It builds PROTEIN & DNA in our cells which is needed for survival!
Closing Question… You learned that we get the nitrogen WE NEED by eating plants & animals… Why do we need nitrogen? It builds PROTEIN & DNA in our cells which is needed for survival!
