Academic Vocabulary Exposition: introduces the setting and characters, sets up/hints at conflict Rising action: shows how conflict becomes more difficult, builds suspense Climax: most exciting part, turning point, makes outcome of conflict clear Falling action: eases the tension, shows how main character resolves conflict Resolution: reveals how everything turns out, sometimes ends with a surprise twist Suspense: feeling of growing tension and excitement felt by the reader, makes reader curious about the outcome, raises questions in reader’s mind Compare: identify similarities of two or more subjects Contrast: identify differences of two or more subjects Context: clues found in words, sentences, and paragraphs that surround an unknown word to help the reader interpret unfamiliar words and ideas
