Stress and Faults
2
Stress on Rocks Is the pressure applied to rocks
Causes the rocks to deform (change shape), break, and/or move 3 types: Compression Tension Shear
3
1. Compression Stress Squeezes rocks together
Occurs at convergent boundaries Profile View:
4
2. Tension Stress Pulls rocks apart Occurs at divergent boundaries
Profile View:
5
3. Shear Stress Slides/grinds rocks past each other
Occurs at transform boundaries Overhead View:
6
Faults Caused by the application of stress which then causes the rock to move 3 types: Normal Fault Reverse Fault Strike-Slip Fault
7
1. Normal Fault
8
1. Normal Fault Occurs with tension stress
Causes the footwall to move up & the hanging wall to move down Profile (side) view:
9
2. Reverse Fault
10
2. Reverse Fault Occurs with compression stress
Causes the footwall to move down & the hanging wall to move up Profile (side) view:
11
3. Strike-Slip Fault
12
3. Strike-Slip Fault Occurs with shear stress Causes horizontal motion
