1
Experimental Design and the Scientific Method
2
Warm-up (9-8-15) Do you think you can perform an experiment without thinking of “experimental design”? Explain your answer and use evidence to support your answer.
3
Outline Objectives Parts of Experimental Design Notes – Add to Metric system title page Why is Experimental design important? Experimental Design Practice
4
Objectives I will be able to articulate the importance of experimental design I will be able to describe the basic elements of experimental design and apply those elements to an original experiment
5
Parts of Experimental Design
Purpose Hypothesis Procedure Independent variable Dependent variable Constants Control group Experimental groups
6
Why Do I Care? Experimental design determines the validity of the results presented Determines whether or not you can trust the experiment Scientific Method is the basis for all scientific thinking and questioning
7
Experimental Design and the Scientific Method
The two go hand in hand Throughout all of your labs in this class, you will be using both experimental design and the scientific method, whether or not you realize it!
8
Biology II Composition Notebooks – Add Experimental Design to Metric System Unit Title Page Create an original LabQuest Experiment using the listed sensors. You will need to include all portions of experimental design for your Lab.
9
What is the PURPOSE of Experimental Design?
Randomize Even out effects we cannot control Ensure equal chance to all possibilities Control Make sure we only get results for what we want Randomize- to make random. To make sure that I have a random sampling from within my sample size Control – to make sure that I have something to compare the results of my experiment to
10
What is the PURPOSE of Experimental Design?
Replicate Get as many replicates (repeats) as possible. Results for a single subject might not be accurate. (No one is perfect on the first try all of the time.) Block Get rid of things we don’t want to study and that we can’t control Best Experiments Are?? The best experiments are usually randomized, comparative, double-blind, and placebo-controlled. Replicate- sample size. How many test subjects I am looking at Block – take care of on the front end of the experiment so I don’ t end up with a bunch of variables that I wasn’t concerned with testing in the first place
12
Warm-up (9-9-15) Write down the parts of experimental design without using your notes

Experimental Design Creation
You are to create an original experiment with your group. Use the guidelines provided to set up your lab in your composition notebooks.
16
Warm-up ( ) Explain the independent and dependent variables for your experiment with your group. Explain how your group is going to have a control group to compare your results to.

Experimental Design Creation
TODAY is the last day to work on your labs. They should be done by today and you need to have your lab write ups done by the end of class. You are to create an original experiment with your group. Use the guidelines provided to set up your lab in your composition notebooks.
24
Conclusion Why is this experiment significant?
Medical applications? Personal applications? What do your results mean? What are your results compared to expected results? If you got different results, provide explanations as to why How could you improve this experiment in the future? Did anything go wrong in your experiment? What suggestions do you have to future scientists to correct those errors? Research – provide specific evidence to support your reasoning and explanations
