The Bohr Model of the Hydrogen Atom
Adv Chemistry Ms. Campos 11/19/12
2
Linked the Atom’s Electron with Photon Emission
Electrons travel in allowed paths called orbits. While traveling in an orbit, the atom’s energy is fixed => lowest energy state when closest to the nucleus. The orbits are separated in energy levels. Ladder metaphor
3
What allows us to see luminous object glow?
JUMPING ELECTRONS! Electrons jump energy levels because each level has a specific amount of energy required for the level. If the energy is greater or smaller, the electron changes levels. When it gets more energy, it moves to a level closer to the nucleus. When it gets less energy, it moves further from the nucleus.
4
Emits a Photon of Light Bohr said that the different colors of light emitted were caused by an electron that had been excited away from its ground state near the nucleus (absorbs energy), returning to its ground state (emits light).
