4. How the fighting in Act 3 Scene 1 links to the Elizabethan times:
The men in this play are outside whereas Juliet is stuck in the confines of her house. This reflects how wealthy women in Elizabethan Times were tutored at home (no schools for girls) Women didn’t have the vote, were unlikely to work and not allowed to go to University.
Jousting was popular for fun in the Elizabethan Times. Men liked it for fun but also to show off their strength.
Medical theories of the Renaissance suggest that men are “excessively hot-blooded and passionate”

In order to impress women, men wanted to prove that they were truly men. They would do this by showing courage and honour, usually through aggression and fighting.
Additionally, the Elizabethan era was a patriarchal society, meaning that men had authority and were dominant over women in all aspects. Men would want to prove they had all the power so that they could keep a strong reputation.

Your Task:
Inside your sword find a quotation for Romeo, Mercutio and Tybalt in Act 3 Scene 1 that all show that men wanted to prove that aggression and fighting was key to their masculine reputation. Then in a different colour OR write and then highlight it, find one Benvolio quotation to show that Shakespeare uses his character to celebrate that fighting doesn’t = masculine.

Shakespeare uses his male characters to both highlight and challenge stereotypes of masculinity in his play. Characters like Mercutio are used strongly to highlight the Elizabethan patriarchal society whereby men used aggression and strength to impress women and to show their social standing. However, it must be clear that Shakespeare perhaps subtly celebrates men who don’t follow the expectation that they should fight through characters such as Benvolio who continually acts as peace maker.
