1 Fermentation

2 fermentation the process where cells obtain energy from glucose without oxygen; there are two types:

3 lactic acid fermentation
Lactic acid fermentation occurs in muscle cells after strenuous activity. Muscle cells use up oxygen faster than it can be replaced. In order to obtain energy (cellular respiration requires oxygen), the cells conduct lactic acid fermentation instead of cellular respiration.

4

5 lactic acid fermentation
occurs in muscle cells after strenuous activity; the waste products are lactic acid and carbon dioxide

6 alcoholic fermentation
Alcoholic fermentation occurs in yeast and some other unicellular organisms that break down sugars. Alcohol is produced in the process.

7

8 alcoholic fermentation
occurs in yeast and some other unicellular organisms that break down sugars; the waste products are alcohol and carbon dioxide

9 Why do cells need to move things in and out of them?
Cells need nutrients, and they need to remove wastes.  2. Do animal cells go through a. cellular respiration? b.Photosynthesis? a. Yes b. NO

10 3. Do plant cells go through a. cellular respiration? B. Photosynthesis? a. Yes b. Yes 4. Where does cellular respiration take place? in the mitochondria of all cells

11 5. What is required for photosynthesis to take place?
carbon dioxide (CO2) water (H2O) and sunlight What is produced? glucose (sugars) and oxygen (O2)

12 6. What is required for cellular respiration to take place?
glucose (sugar) and oxygen b. What is produced? energy carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O)

13 7. What two organelles do plant cells have that animal cells do not
7. What two organelles do plant cells have that animal cells do not? chloroplasts cell walls

14 8. What process do mitochondria go through when not enough oxygen is available during exercise?
lactic acid fermentation 9. What is the other type of fermentation? alcoholic fermentation

15 Why does fermentation occur?
NO OXYGEN IS PRESENT 10. Who first discovered cells? Robert Hooke 11. Anton van-Leeuwenhoek was the first person to see ____________. living cells
