Marquette and Jolliet Expedition of 1673
Louis XIV of France sends explorers to map the New World. Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet 1st known non-native people to explore the “Great Lakes”. Europeans Settlement for trade. (Furs, Fishing, Crops) And a Christian Mission. “Great Water”. Portages rivers in “chicaqua” or “shikaakwa”. Des Plaines, Chicago, and Illinois. Native Tribes: Miami, Algonquin, Potawatomi, and *Illiniwek! Jacques Marquette 1675; Louis Jolliet 1700.

The Colonies Wealthy colonies lay claim to land east of Appalachia.
Britain and Spain also sending explorers. Becomes known as the Indiana Territory. President John Adams declares the area as the Northwest Territory in 1787.

Jean Baptiste Du Sable 1st citizen of Chicago!
Born in Hispaniola circa 1745 French mariner father, mother is a slave of African descent. Highly educated explorer from New Orleans. Marries a Potawatomi in both a tribal and Catholic ceremony. Settles on the banks of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Trader, farmer, mediator. Dies in August of 1818?

Fort Dearborn 1803 Named after Henry Dearborn U.S. Secretary of War under the Presidency of Thomas Jefferson. Stands at the mouth of the Chicago River. Outpost for the United States of America. 1st actual Chicago settlement. French and Indian War circa 1755 War of Land, trading, and naval issues. Dearborn Massacre. Rebuilt in Chicago River and Chicago Fire destroy the remnents. Wacker and Michigan Avenues.

Chief Black Hawk Born 1760s to the Sauk Tribe near Rock Island, Illinois. Son of a medicine man. War Captain at the age of 15. Alliance with Britain in the War of 1812. Black Hawk Wars of the 1830s. Prisoner of war under the orders of President Andrew Jackson. First Native American to have their autobiography published. Dies in 1838 at the estimated age of 70.

Fun Facts Illinois, “land of great men” becomes the 21st United State on December 3, Illini Tribe now reside in Oklahoma. Chicago is incorporated as a town in Saturday March 4, 1837 The City of Chicago is incorporated. “Windy City” and “Second City” Chicagoland as of the 2010 census is home to nearly 10 million people. Northwest Territory and John Evans.
