Back-to-SchoolFacts More families have kids in school — thanks to the large generation of Millennials who are parents of school-age children — which is boosting total back-to-school spending to near-record levels. Nearly 4 million babies are born every year! Preschool Children (3-5) – 12 million Elementary Children (6-8) – 12 million Approximately 24 million children will need school supplies for preschool & school ever year! Zak’s research indicates that 89.7% of children ages 5-12 take a packed from home lunch at least once per week with 41% taking one daily! Back-to-School and College spending to reach $82.8 billion “With the economy thriving thanks to tax reform and growing consumer confidence, we expect to see a very strong season,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “College spending is expected to be at its highest level ever, and back-to-school will be one of the three highest years on record. Families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average $ each, for a total of $27.5 billion. That’s the third-highest total in the history of the survey. Those with young people heading to college as well as college and graduate students purchasing for themselves plan to spend an average $ each, for a total of $55.3 billion. That’s an all-time high in the history of the survey. Along with the winter holidays, back-to-class is one of the top spending events for consumers. Back-to-school and back-to-college shoppers spend more per household on items for the upcoming school year than consumers spend on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day combined.
