6 Points of Mindful Speech
Speaking and Listening Introduction
2
Speaking and Listening
Speak Slowly Enunciate Clearly Be Concise Listen to Yourself Listen to Others Use Silence as a Part of Speech
3
SPEAK SLOWLY Slow down. Notice how fast you are talking.
Deliberately S L O W your pace down. (this is also called “pace”, you can change it) (calmly speaking, we are aware, with awareness we can change our mental experience and how we communicate and present- we have autonomy!!)
4
ENUNCIATE CLEARLY “ELOCUTION”
Pronounce each word crisply, clearly. Pronounce each word as if it were a precious thing to say. When speaking in front of a group, speak with a louder volume than normal, speak to everyone. (they want to receive the gift of your words!!!)
5
BE CONCISE Try to express yourself clearly, with just the words you need. If it takes awhile, that is o.k., once you know what you need to say, make that point clearly.
6
LISTEN TO YOURSELF What are you saying? What do you sound like?
Are you moving through your speech SLOWLY? ENUNCIATING? USE AWARENESS OF YOUR SPEECH TO calm yourself, be loving toward your own effort and communication!
7
LISTEN TO OTHERS Be present. Make eye contact. Try to understand.
What do they sound like? Listen in present silence, until it is your turn to respond.
8
USE SILENCE AS A PART OF SPEECH
It is o.k. to pause while speaking. Let your listener(s) think about what you are saying. Use silence to make a strong point. You can also pause to think about what you are saying. Silence is underneath all things, let it be a calming opportunity. Silence is o.k., then finish speaking.
9
Now we are ready to practice Speaking and Listening with a partner, with the class, everywhere!!!
