Developing Strong Action Plans
Developing Strong Action Plans “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” ― Benjamin Franklin “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” ― Abraham Lincoln Actions can come from anywhere and at any time. The problem with making mental notes is that the ink fades very rapidly Anonymous

12
What is an Action Plan? Very simply;
It is a written / digital method to ensure activities and issues are tracked and completed. This can include actions from; Incidents such as injuries Projects Corrections Programs Developments Implementations Etc.
13
Why develop a plan for Safety Actions?
Might forget what needs doin’ Allows us to evaluate best actions (Hierarchy) Provides a method to hold people accountable Assists in timeliness Can be communicated to others To verify actions take place Keep employees up to date Impressive when showing OSHA inspector Boss says he wants our actions tracked I got written up the last time I forgot to do one The Safety Man will squeal on me if I don’t Cover my rear end To ensure we remove the hazard, complete activities and improve performance.
14
Where do actions come from?
On your paper, write down ALL of the references that you think can be a source of action items within your domain (pipe plant, wire manufacturing, etc.) General plant observations Employee reports (near misses, hazards, etc.) Inspections or audits Injuries or first aid cases Something that happens at home An incident you hear about from another plant Machine failure You hear about something happening in the media It is found that a regulation is not being complied with A process that you’ve witnessed a 100 times causes you to question it on the 101st time.
15
Actions Can Come From Anywhere…
+ Action Items Design Order Steel Fabrication Testing Training ??? Observed in use by airport ground crew Now in use by RCB Fabricators in one of our plants
16
What Makes A Good Action?
Write down a G for “Good” and a B for “Bad” on your paper Educate employees about PPE policy Develop an Inspection process for the machine Talk to Employee Tell them to not do that again Write the employee up or fire him Form a task force to develop a plant policy on Carbon Monoxide Make sure employees close the door next time Develop a procedure for brushing pipe Tell employee to wear gloves Develop and hold a session for setting up cages properly
17
What Makes a Good Action?
There is no clear definition of what makes a good action Some people like every detail Others simply need an overview. HOWEVER; At a minimum an action should include: What we want to do, i.e., Develop a platform to finish RCB’s Who is going to do it, i.e., Plant Fabricator An estimated date of completion, i.e., 5th of Octvember….
