2 Sun Ray Enterpris e Server Software
Centralizovaný manažment Ethernet Switch Data Center LAN Sun Ray Enterpris e Server Software l With the Sun Ray Hot Desk architecture, the managed area that we saw in the previous slide has shrunken considerably. What you are doing is collapsing the network of, for example, 100 individually managed PCs or nodes onto a centralized server where 100 sessions are run on one LAN manageable node. All state has been removed from the desktop and aggregated onto one server running the Sun Ray enterprise server software. l Unlike previous clients, the Sun Ray 1 enterprise appliances require no administration or maintenance—they are not network nodes and have been removed from the LAN. l All of this drives bottom line savings: 100 managed nodes ->1 server running Sun Ray enterprise server software. l At the same time, this is an architecture that leverages and compliments your current backend infrastructure. As a result, customers' very expensive backends—their data center, their application servers—remain the same. Internet Aplikácie Sun Ray 1 Enterprise Appliances

4 Server Sizing Internet, intranet, e-mail, StarOffice, Citrix
Sun Ray Hot Desk Architecture Server Sizing Internet, intranet, , StarOffice, Citrix # of Users <25 25-100 >200 # of CPUs 1 2 2-4 4+ RAM 0.5-1GB 1-2 GB 2-4 GB >4 GB Disks 2 2-3 3-4 RAID Server Ultra™ 10s Sun Enterprise 250 Sun Enterprise 450 Sun Enterprise 4500 NICs 1 x 100MB 1 x GB l This table provides an example of the size of the server running the Sun Ray enterprise server software required to support a range of Sun Ray clients. It’s based on a typical enterprise office environment with heavy emphasis on a company Intranet, and StarOffice, an office productivity suite. It assumes that most office users are actively using their computers between 25 and 33 percent of the time and accounts for a mix of user types. This sizing does not account for significant use of resource hogging applications like live video or large animated gifs. l Server size requirements always depend on the number of users getting their sessions from the server, the applications the users run, how the users divide their time between applications, and the overall computing activity levels of the users. l You’ll notice that the servers are very well endowed with lots of memory and CPUs to provide the resources necessary for many concurrent users. The number of disks specified in the table are required to provide sufficient disk I/O bandwidth for virtual memory to provide instantaneous startup when a user rejoins his session. The number of NICs(Network Interface Cards) refers to the number that need to be added. l Accessing Microsoft Office automation apps: Running the ICA client to get access to office automation applications like Microsoft on an NT TSE server will reduce the RAM requirements for the Sun Ray server but will increase the RAM requirement on the NT server. CPU resource requirements for the Sun Ray server stay about the same whether running office automation natively or accessing them via an ICA client. The ICA solution basically moves resource requirements to an NT server, reducing reliability, adding admin overhead, and increasing costs. l It is anticipated that that Sun Ray Hot Desk architecture will be supported on the Sun Enterprise during the Fall of 1999.
